British Standards Institute (BSI)
Client: The Strategy directorate within the British Standards Institute (BSI)
Situation: The BSI is looking to maximise and ‘operationalise’ its impact across its portfolio of activity, its products, processes and its people
Ask: The Next Lighthouse was asked to help the BSI to understand how to systematically map, measure and maximise its impact. The end goal is a framework to guide future activities for impact
Board alignment: ran workshops and sought input from board members to understand the various internal perspectives of BSI impact as a starting point
Stakeholder data: engaged a sample of BSI clients (in the construction sector) to provide data on how and why they BSI standards, and what their Expected Value (EV) of those standards were
Peer benchmarking: reviewed the impact reporting framework of a critical peer, and assessed its applicability in the BSI context
Impact approach: BSI now have a customised framework through which to map its impact. The next step is to turn this into a tool that supports impact measurement
Thought leadership: A memo to the Board was drafted alongside Said Business School on the necessary data inputs that will ultimately determine BSI impact
Roadmap to the future: BSI’s impact journey is incomplete, but there are strong foundations and a clear pathway. This will support decisions on future standards and strategic partnerships
